The town of Shelter Island is located between Long Island's North and South Forks and accessible only by ferry. Shelter Island is also a hamlet within the town of Shelter Island. Shelter Island's remote location and scenic beaches make it a picturesque destination in a biologically significant area. A third of the island is owned by The Nature Conservancy as part of their mission to preserve biologically significant places and keep them in their naturally wild state. Shelter Island started as a port from which the British shipped hay and a shipyard in which the schooner “Paragon," which successfully ran a blockade during the Napoleonic Wars. Later, Shelter Island developed into a bustling seasonal residence and vacation destination. Shelter Island is known as a more secluded and less social seasonal vacation destination than the nearby Hamptons.
